The pipa is a Chinese string instrument also known as a lute. The Pipa is one of the oldest Chinese musical instruments and has been around for two thousand years. The name Pipa is made up of two syllables "Pi" and "Pa" which stand for two different playing techniques. The syllable "Pi" means a player will use multiple fingers to pluck a string, and the syllable "Pa" means a player will strum the strings with their thumb. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pipa
Below is an example of what the pipa sounds like:

I'm new to Wordful Wednesday and wanted to stop by for a visit.
I don't have any idea other than it being a drum of some sort.
Hope you can find time to visit with me and my W W.
Have a great week.
Steel drum for a Bahamas band? Looks like fun.
Happy WW
I can hear the steel drum band now! I love the sound so I innocently checked into the price in a children's toy catalog. Shock ensued, and I saved my money for several something elses.
Just seeing that picture reminded me of watching "Reading Rainbow" when I was a kid...they would do segments with different musical instruments and I remember hearing them play this one. Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane! :o)
Daht is a steel drum mahn!
So THAT's what a lute looks like?
The instrument today? A bowl? :)
wow!!!! pretty and sounds good too!
I know that as a Steel Pan made from the oil drums in Trinidad. They cost an arm and a leg. My mom and I looked into taking lessons... and found out that we both could fly to Trinidad for the price of 1 pan! LOL
I have no idea what that is, just wanted to say hi! It's been so long...:-)
exacythReally - a Pipa! Beautiful sound.
