My Goal:

Plato once said, "Education in music is most sovereign because more than anything else rhythm and harmony find their way to the inmost soul and take strongest hold upon it, bringing with them and imparting grace if one is rightly trained."

I, too, believe education in music is most sovereign, and I believe that everyone who learns music will reap its benefits.

This is Munchkins and Music--A Web site dedicated to helping moms to teach music to their children. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and have been playing music since I was eight years old. I play both the saxophone and piano as well as conduct band. One of my passions is to teach, and I have taught all ages of students privately and publicly.

Because of my background in music, I always have people asking me questions, such as: Why is it important to educate my child in music? How can I get my child interested in music? How can I teach my child music and where do I start? Come with me as I give answers to these questions and many more questions, and together we will educate the future of tomorrow.

  1. Your blog title caught my attention from Scribbit's comment box. Such a cute name for your blog - I am a teacher of the piano and violin - although piano is my great love! Can't wait to see what you write on your blog! Please stop by mine when you get a chance!

  2. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I appreciate music as a listener more than anything else as I never learned to read music. My dh is musical and I'm so thankful! He's in charge of our children's music ed. I'll tune him in to your site too.

    Your photo is so sweet!

  3. Cool Website Andrea! I'm glad to see that you are helping other moms teach music. I just started my own early childhood music. Check out my blog at music-movement.blogspot.com so we can share ideas!

  4. hey "EA"! this is awesome! My daughter, Samantha, sings EVERYTHING. It's like her life is a musical or something, which is really cute and she can match pitch and everything. We just got over a somewhat agonizing decision of whether to rent her the 16th sized violin she became enamored with at the music store or take her to have dance classes (ballet/tap combined preschool class). She's 3, and has decided for herself she wants to do dance. I already am teaching her what the different notes are and she has given me a "flute concert" and has an imaginary "flute student" she teaches. I will probably teach her piano in the future. Have you ever heard of musikgarten? I have a friend (concert pianists/piano pedagogy at the Masters level) who recently told me about it and got certified in it. She was impressed with the curricula so I've started to check it out. Anyhow, you can click on my name to get to my blog, which is more of a family update thing, but I do put my own opinions on there every now and again. It's great to see your stuff! (And if Sammi ends up wanting to be a dancer, at least she has to move to music!)

  6. Thanks for saying hi the other day! Your blog looks promising! Got any suggestions for convincing my two year old that my voice isn't so bad. He won't let me sing to him! I've Never had that happen with the older three kids.

  7. Thanks for your comments on my blog in the last little while! The funny thing is, I have done a google search for ideas to teach my kids music, and I know I landed here before! So thanks, if I didn't comment back then.

I will check back...my music degree is in performance, and I didn't get to learn a lot of the stuff about how to actually teach young kids, so I appreciate this blog.

  8. Hello! Thanks for posting to my blog, The Write Power, which led me to yours. Congratulations on your mission and your goal! I applaud you! My daughter is a music teacher, and both my children sang on road trips. :) We are a musical family. My husband and both daughters play violin. One daughter plays viola. We all play the piano, and I started taking cello lessons at age 36 so I wouldn't feel left out in the string instrument area. :) We then formed a family string ensemble and played in church. What a blessing! Keep up the great work in the wonderful state of Alaska, possibily the home of our next Vice-President! :)
