10 Reasons Why Children Should Learn Music:

1. "Children raised in cultures rich with music tend to develop learning and communication skills more quickly than other children.

2. There is a high correlation between positive self-perception, high cognitive competence scores, self-esteem, and interest and involvement in school music.

3. Music experiences instill positive attitudes, a positive self-image, a desire to achieve excellence, an ability to set goals, cooperation, and group cohesiveness.

4. Students participating in music outperform non-music students on achievement tests in reading and math. These differences become greater and longer the students participate in music.

5. Students participating in music have a higher overall grade point average in high school and score 21-38 points higher on Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT’s) than do other students.

6. By producing strong scholastic achievement scores, music contributes positively to the school environment. Music teacher staffing is a better indicator of overall educational quality than is the overall ratio of pupils to teachers.

7. Many institutions of higher learning seek out students who have participated in musical organizations.

8. Musical training can be a big help in getting to the top. 90% of more than 1000 chief executive officers and legislators said that playing a musical instrument as a child helped them develop character and leadership skills.

9. Instrumental musicians are good citizens. Statistics show that the crime rate among musicians is lower than among the population at large.

10. Music is an efficient and meaningful way to integrate different cultural attributes into the curriculum." (Standard of Excellence, Bruce Pearson)

Why do you think children should learn music?

  1. Teaching children about music and to play music leads to lifelong enjoyment. It could be a career, it could be a past time, it could be a stress reliever. It makes great family time. I remember the family singing around the piano when I was a child. Today I still love to hear piano music in my home.

  2. Oooh! A kid's music blog! I don't think I've ever run across one before.

I'm not very muscially inclined and need all the help I can get!

  3. Hi, thanks for coming by my blog and commenting! I love meeting new people. I actually started college as a music education major (clarinet) but like an idiot I switched. Music is so totally important I can't even begin to express it. My senior thesis in high school was actually a paper on the benefits of music education!

  4. wow... I really never thought how important kids learning music could be.

  5. I also feel that music is a good indicator of the reselience of children and their ability to "stick with it". I find that my musical training corelates into the way I learn other things. I have always been a self-starter in music and find that I am not afraid of learning and teaching myself. My girls, although, not quite ready for official lessons - love to copy me and pull out their violin when I pull mine out. It's so interesting to see them! Great post!

  6. Thanks for stopping by. I love music and play piano. As far as your question goes - I think you covered the answers. There are so many reasons for kids to learn music. It's given me enjoyment for all my 47 years!

  7. Very interesting..and I believe it. We are not musically talented in my family..though we always listen to music with our son, and we like a lot of the same music so we have fun together with it. I homeschooled and wanted him to learn an instrument but it was hard to find classes we could afford here on Maui, we were very limited. Now he is 17 and even though we can't play instruments we have the fairly large keyboard we got him when he was little and a couple guitars. he and his dad are forever messing around with them. It sounds horrible but they have fun! lol!

Thank you so much for visiting my blog! It's always nice to get a new visitor! Heres to hoping we both find a buck in our pockets again someday soon! lol!

  8. So glad you stopped by so I could find your blog! I LOVED this post. I never learned how to play an instrument growing up, and always wish I had. Now, my daughter has been taking piano, and my son is interested in guitar, though I think he may still be too young. Loved your list!

  9. Thanks for your comment on my blog!

Music got me through High School, without it I would not have graduated and/or would have dropped out completely.
Music is like breathing for me - well, singing actually. I simply have to sing. Nonsense stuff for the kids, along with songs on the radio or even commercials.
Anyway, not much of an answer really, I just know that music has enhanced my life greatly & I want to pass that on to my kids.

  10. I believe that music should be taught as a standard subject, piano too, in elementary school. There is a relatively new charter school in Pocatello where for their music starting in 2nd grade I think is to have piano lessons, but for the benefits stated. I also think that any performing art creates a discipline and dedication and passion that just simply cannot be duplicated anywhere. I have come to the conclusion that my goal in music education is not to turn everyone into aspiring music majors, but to be lifelong lovers of music, to appreciate it to be able to continue making music for their enjoyment and release.

  11. I agree with you, but I don't even know where to start with my kids. We have no instruments. My husband and I have never played anything. I can't read music and I don't know what first steps to take with my 5 and 6 years old boys.

    KEEP BELIEVING

  14. I love this quote and feel it gives reason enough to want to immerse my kids in the richness of music. "Next to the word of God, Music deserves the highest praise. The gift of language, combined with the gift of song, was given to humankind that we should proclaim the Word of God through music."
    - Martin Luther

I am glad you liked Laurie's testimony blog, I am happy to have found yours. It is a good idea. You might be interested in one of my blogs that I just started: http://completeleemusic.blogspot.com/

  15. I'm so glad I came across your blog! I've been trying to incorporate music in my 15-mo-old's everyday routines, but we're in a little bit of a rut.

  16. One of my favorite things to do is compose my own piano music. I think for children, it's a great way to relax, express themselves, and just be able to think of and about things as they play their instrument or sing that they normally wouldn't be able to, or as easily if they weren't playing their own music.

Music has helped me throughout my life! Thank you for the list:)

  17. Another major benefit hasn't been touched. Social skills. Students who take up a stringed instrument can play in a band with their friends as opposed to hanging out on the streets. Students who are musically gifted also seem to impress their peers quite a bit. Everyone wants to hang around that cool guitar player.

  19. good but there are some things this site can improve on-
*put up a reason that defends against the concept that most musicians don's earn much money
*put up something defending the statement "we're too busy"
